A life-saving, community-driven reality

At the Humane Animal Welfare Society (HAWS), we are dedicated to saving lives.

HAWS is committed to remaining an Open Admission shelter while also maintaining No-Kill status. To that end, HAWS has created programs to both care for animals in need and to craft a long-lasting solution.

HAWS does not turn our community’s animals away, keeping our doors open to help animals in distress as well as lost and stray animals. We do not charge a fee or require an appointment to re-home a pet. We heal those animals that are medically treatable, rehabilitate pets with behavior issues, and teach adults and children alike the skills of compassion and empathy – ensuring our entire community treats animals, and one another, with respect. Through our diverse programs, HAWS is using innovative ideas to achieve our goal of a humane community and to end needless euthanasia.

Our shelter is committed to saving every animal in our care who can be saved. We consider humane euthanasia when there are medical conditions with no chance of recovering an acceptable quality of life, in situations when it would be clearly inhumane or unsafe to not do so immediately, and in circumstances when community and public safety cannot be reasonably assured.
