Tales by the Fire
$10/family | All ages | June 6th, 2026 | 5:30-7:00PM
Join us as we kick off summer with a warm, adventure-filled evening at the Schallock Center for Animals! Tales by the Fire: Summer Kickoff is the perfect seasonal celebration for families and animal lovers of all ages.
Meet our resident goats and meet one of our resident horses as you explore the property.
Create a bird feeder to take home, splash into fun at our water table, and set out on a Summer Nature Walk the whole family can enjoy while filling out the BINGO sheet for a prize.
End the evening gathered around the crackling fire with a s’mores kit while listening to animal themed stories that celebrate the magic of summer nights.
Don’t miss this cheerful mix of sunshine, animals, and outdoor fun — all in support of our shelter pets!
Families are welcome to bring a picnic to enjoy on the property from 5:00-5:30.
Event Highlights:
- Read to a Dog, Grow with Confidence: Kids practice reading aloud to friendly, nonjudgmental dogs in a calm, welcoming environment.
- Backed by Research: Studies show reading to dogs reduces stress and improves focus-boosting both reading skills and self-esteem.
- 30-Minute Private Sessions: Quiet, private stalls designed to make a cozy reading environment for kids.
Hannah’s Haven
$10/child | Grades 1st-5th
Hannah’s Haven is a heartwarming reading program created in loving memory of Hannah, a beloved HAWS alumni dog whose happiest moments were spent working with children in schools, libraries, and community events.
In this special program, children get the chance to build confidence and strengthen their reading skills by spending 30 peaceful minutes reading to a gentle, attentive dog—either a current shelter dog or one of our HAWS alumni. Studies show that reading to a calm dog helps kids feel more relaxed, focused, and encouraged—often even more than reading to a teacher or friend.
There are two cozy reading stalls available to reserve during each time slot. Whether your child is a beginning reader or a seasoned bookworm, Hannah’s Haven is a joyful place to connect, grow, and share the love of stories—with a furry friend by their side.
Goat Yoga
$20/person | Ages 7+
Life can be stressful, but its not so baaaa-d! Take an hour to unwind with a low pressure yoga class and meet with the HAWS Herd. This class, led by a professional instructor, is perfect for yogis at any skill level aged 7 years and older (including those who have never tried it). Turn downward dog into downward goat as our five residents mosey between mats and create countless memories.
What you’ll need to bring:
- A yoga mat (or towel – the goats don’t judge!)
- Closed-toed shoes
Note: The yoga session will be held within our goat pasture. We will do our best to keep the area tidy, but our yoga mats will be placed directly on the grass. If it is cold, please dress for the weather, as the session will be held outside, barring rain.
