Meet the HAWS Herd!
Meet the animal ambassadors of SCA! Our resident herd of 6 horses and 5 goats play an important role in helping us create meaningful, engaging experiences for guests of all ages. From summer camps and community events to yoga classes, educational programs, and special activities throughout the year, these animals help foster connection, learning, and fun across our property.
Each member of the herd has their own unique personality, and together they help make SCA a welcoming and memorable place for our community. Learn more about the animals who call SCA home and the important role they play in our programs year-round.

Horses
Coco
Species: Holsteiner Warmblood
Birthday: May 2015
Ambassador Since: July 2023
Coco was born on May 20th, 2015, and is a Holsteiner Warmblood gelding. Standing at 17.1 hands high, he is the tallest herd member at the Schallock Center for Animals. Coco arrived in July of 2023 when his previous owner, seeking an easier career path for this former show jumper, reached out to HAWS.
This big, beautiful gelding is a citizen of the world, Coco was born in the Czech Republic, and when he came across the ocean by plane, he had to get his very own passport.
Coco’s flea-bitten grey coat and large stature are not just impressive to look at, his athletic and strong conformation help to educate participants during unmounted anatomy lessons too.
Coco is also a well-known performer around the barn and knows a few special tricks. Whether asked or not, he loves to demonstrate one of his many unique talents, including the adorable well practiced pleas for treats that he knows he deserves after showing off said tricks. Coco also loves meeting new people, romping with his buddy Skittles, and enjoys a solid roll in the arena sand.
Ranger
Species: American Quarter Horse
Birthday: June 2018
Ambassador Since: June 2021
Ranger was born on June 7th, 2018, and is an American Quarter Horse gelding, standing 15.1 hands high. Ranger arrived at the Schallock Center for Animals in June of 2021, from the UW River Falls Equine Program.
Ranger is a beautiful dapple grey, but in time, his color will lighten with age, and one day he’ll be completely white. For now, that striking dapple pattern makes him one of the most photogenic members of the herd.
Ranger is as curious as he is itchy, and when he is not requesting scratches on his notoriously itchy backside, he loves to investigate, explore, and take in every detail of his surroundings.
When he’s not busy with his investigations, Ranger enjoys settling in for a long nap in his stall and regularly can be found snoozing after his morning breakfast.
Blue
Species: Grade Quarter Horse
Birthday: January 2006
Ambassador Since: November 2022
Blue was born on January 1st, 2006 and is a Grade Quarter Horse gelding, standing 14 hands high. Blue arrived at the Schallock Center for Animals in November of 2022, coming from Camp Minikani where he had previously worked as a lesson horse.
Named for his striking blue roan coat, Blue is incredibly gentle and patient in all things, and his quiet demeanor carries right into his work as one of the barn’s most versatile horses. He participates in all levels of Equine Explorers, reading programs, and is a go-to for all riding activities. Blue is also very expressive and in tune with the energy of those around him. This means Blue is especially helpful in teaching beginners how to recognize and understand horses language and communications.
Blue loves a good roll in the arena, and definitely loves a sunny afternoon when he can often be found napping in the warmest patch of sunshine he can find.
Cody
Species: Grade Quarter Horse
Birthday: February 2013
Ambassador Since: November 2023
Cody was born on February 21st, 2013, and is a Grade Quarter Horse gelding, standing 14 hands high. Cody arrived at the Schallock Center for Animals in November of 2023, coming to HAWS through a local farrier.
Cody’s coat color is Grulla, a rare and striking shade with a distinctive black dun stripe running down his spine and a tan-and-black undertone that makes him truly one of a kind in the herd. He is a gentle, easy-going soul who loves being groomed and is wonderfully patient and soft, making him a wonderful partner for teaching the participants about grooming, riding equipment, and saddling and tacking techniques.
Cody loves learning new tricks, going for walks around the grounds, and his very best friend Candy Corn.
Candy Corn
Species: American Miniature Horse
Birthday: January 2016
Ambassador Since: December 2023
Candy Corn was born in January of 2016 and is an American Miniature Horse mare. Originally Candy came to board at the Schallock Center for Animals in May of 2022. Joining the herd through a HAWS volunteer, it didn’t take long for this tiny powerhouse to make her presence very well known.
Standing at miniature horse height, Candy’s small stature and flashy dun tobiano coat is as charming as she is. In fact, Candy just may take the award for most adorable ambassador of SCA, as the most common exclamation from meeting Candy is “AWWWW!”.
Candy’s small size helps to fill some unique rolls for the programs, as Candy goes on walks during camp sessions just like a big dog, and has even made an appearance on a TV set.
Candy absolutely loves being groomed, loves jumping over objects she could walk right over, and loves her best friend Cody.
Skittles
Species: Chincoteague Pony
Birthday: March 2004
Ambassador Since: March 2022
Skittles was born in March of 2004 and is a Chincoteague Pony gelding. Skittles arrived at the Schallock Center for Animals in March of 2022, spotted as available on Facebook — and as a true descendant of the legendary wild ponies of Chincoteague Island, it’s safe to say his origin story is one of the most unique in the herd. Part of the iconic seasonal pony migration swim, Skittles carries a little bit of that bold and free spirit with him everywhere he goes.
Don’t let his compact 12-hand frame fool you, this boy has more charm than horses twice his size and his color, a striking black and white tobiano, is almost as eye-catching as his personality.
You would never know it from meeting this energetic little guy, but Skittles is actually the oldest resident at the Schallock Center for Animals. Whether he’s making appearances at children’s birthday parties, or roughhousing with his best buddy Ranger, Skittles brings a contagious energy to everything he does. His favorite things? Food and absolutely any opportunity to be the center of attention.
