#38: Play Groups

Socialization is key to great relationships, both owner-dog and dog-dog. The foundation for this can start at the shelter level! At HAWS we’ve embraced the concept of play groups as a means to work on socialization and manners along with giving our residents enrichment and exercise.

Each dog in the shelter gets a chance to run and play with other dogs, in small groups of just two or possibly as many as four, usually with dogs of similar size and energy. Playtime primarily takes place at the shelter in an area called Mark’s Yard. This space was generously donated by Mary LaFond and the Grisa-LaFond Family, in memory of her husband Mark.

Our Behavior team carefully screens the participants to make sure they have complementary play styles, and that throughout the play sessions they are engaging properly with each other.

So much information is gained through these sessions that can be passed along to prospective adopters! We’ve also watched dogs come out of their shells and blossom because of these interactions with others of their own kind. A once-reactive dog can become less so, because it has had the chance to meet and sniff and encounter other dogs. A sad shelter pup can suddenly become the life of the party – they just needed an outlet.

Who doesn’t love joining a friend for a fun meet-up?!
