#33: Giving Thanks on our 60th Anniversary for our Humane Community

The Humane Animal Welfare Society was officially established on this date in 1965. Our incorporation allowed our founders to go forward with the plans they had made – to create a centralized animal shelter and humane society to serve the needs of the residents of Waukesha County and their animals.

If only our founders could see how things turned out!

HAWS was able to go from operating out of cars, garages and municipal lots to our own shelter building on Northview Road. Our organization started as a means to assist lost, found and unwanted pets. Now, due to six decades of unwavering support from our community (and five facility expansions), we are thriving – not just as an adoption center and animal shelter but as a full service humane society with education programs for all ages, spay/neuter and veterinary assistance, training classes and consultations, equine programs and more.

We will never take our community for granted. We are thankful to be surrounded by so many caring people that, in the tradition of our founders, continue to seek ways to help not just animals but all living beings.

Looking ahead, we can only imagine what the next 60 years could bring! But, if they are anything like the past, HAWS future is bright and our community is the reason.
