#39: SCA Morning Chore Crew

HAWS Herd (five goats and six to eight horses) is housed in two different barns and several paddocks at our Schallock Center for Animals in Delafield.

HAWS SCA staff includes a full time Equine Specialist, Center Coordinator and Maintenance Staff – as well as interns and other part-timers throughout the year.

A larger facility housing larger animals means lots of work: Each day the stalls must be thoroughly cleaned. Horses and goats must be given fresh water, food, hay and supplements. The Herd also needs human interaction to make sure they are great ambassadors and educators for HAWS.

As an organization, HAWS survives because of our volunteers, and the Schallock Center is no exception! The volunteers that make up our Morning Chore Crew are such a valuable part of the team – arriving early in the morning to provide the best possible care for the Herd and keep our staff from being completely overwhelmed.

It’s not a bad way to start the day: Sure, mucking messy stalls is a must, but so is the chance to see the SCA in all its glory as the world wakes up. The Herd is also good at showing their appreciation with a happy whinny and nudge with the nose…especially if there’s a peppermint candy in a nearby pocket!
