#36: Catio!

#36: Catio

Most cats don’t go for walks on a leash – especially the ones spending time with us at HAWS. But, we know they’d love to spend some time in the sun and fresh air if given the opportunity.

We’re not sure who is more happy that Catios were invented – our human team or our cats-in-residence!

What’s a Catio, you ask? Catios are special screened enclosures with climbing apparatus and ledges for sunning. They are designed to be safe spaces where our favorite felines can enjoy time outside, without succumbing to the dangers like predators or vehicles.

Years ago, our first small catio at HAWS was used for the cats in isolation. They couldn’t have regular exercise or cuddling sessions with our volunteers because of easily-transmitted diseases or skin conditions. Now, thanks to the generosity of Kristine Cherek and Kirk Larsen we will soon have a permanent, multi-use catio at HAWS for various groups of our resident cats to enjoy!

It is always exciting to see advances in animal welfare become reality at HAWS, and we look forward to this amazing addition to our facility.
