#34: Summer SCA Dog Walkers
Each summer we hold special week-long kids’ camp sessions called “Gone to the Dogs” at our Schallock Center for Animals in Delafield. Shelter dogs take up residence at the SCA for these sessions, spending Monday through Friday with the campers and Friday evening through Sunday at foster homes.
The dogs and the campers work together, gaining a better understanding of each other. The campers are there to learn about care, responsibility and training, but they aren’t always able to provide for all of the dogs’ exercise and enrichment needs.
HAWS’ Dog Walking Volunteers to the rescue!
A number of our trusted dog walkers spend time each summer not just at our Waukesha shelter but also road-tripping daily out to the SCA, to ensure the dogs living there temporarily will get the same care and TLC as all of HAWS’ in-shelter dogs. With a 5-acre private, fenced dog park and miles of trails, there is plenty of ground for the on-site pups to cover.
We also know that daily trip to the SCA is also lots of ground to cover for the humans! We are thankful to have volunteers willing to, quite literally, go the ‘extra mile’ for HAWS adoptables.
