Animals are often the best teachers! At HAWS, we use both shelter pets and alumni ambassadors to present educational programs that are helping to grow our humane community.
HAWS’ two most popular in-school programs are Hannah’s Haven and No More Bullying.
HANNAH’S HAVEN
This program was named to honor Hannah, a special HAWS’ alumni whose greatest joy and achievement was working with children. For this program, children spend a half-hour reading to one of HAWS’ Ambassa-dogs that is brought to their school. Research has shown that “the presence of a calm, attentive dog” when children are reading aloud reduces stress and improves concentration much more than a supportive adult, or even a friend. And, the dogs love it, too!
Irving Elementary got connected through HAWS’ educator Alexis’ grandma, Lee! She sought out the school and looped everyone in. For the past two years Irving teacher Susan has been our main point of contact, and has had nothing but great things to say about the program: “It truly shows in the kids’ reading scores that this program is impactful.”
NO MORE BULLYING
Many studies show that people who mistreat animals are more likely to become violent towards others. Through the “NMB” program, HAWS works with students in 3rd – 5th grades to teach ways to prevent them from practicing bullying. Five hour-long classroom visits by HAWS include an animal sidekick – chosen from our adoptables, education animals or alumni.
The program teaches children core values such as respect, self-control, responsibility and compassion. They are encouraged to practice those values so they become ingrained in their character. Additionally, incorporating a visit from a pet along with these lessons helps to keep students attention, and adds an incentive to practice each week’s lesson.
Ms. Christian from Swallow Elementary has ensured “NMB” is part of their curriculum for the past four years. Initially we reached out offering the program, and she has reached out to set it up every year since then! She notes, “This program is both impactful and fun! The class loves the animal piece as well.”
