Time, Talent, Treasure: the things all organizations hope to be rich with. Sitting down to write this Direct Line, after greeting five chipper early morning dog walkers in our lobby on a brisk spring day, I know that HAWS is rich.
An entire-cross section of our team jumped into action one rainy day in November to rescue a cat that had gotten away in our parking lot and proceeded to climb one of our pine trees
I think all of us have witnessed the magic of animals, the transformation that occurs when a connection is made, the connection that transcends trauma, that heals, inspires and soothes one’s soul. I believe more people have been saved by animals than perhaps animals saved by people, but it goes both ways.

HAWS was created by community members to serve the needs of our community. Co-founder Mike Schallock famously said “It’s about the animals,” and his words guide us to this day for each program, service and activity we offer for the pets and people of our area.
HAWS is happy to announce a new education program in partnership with two fantastic local organizations that work with adults with intellectual disabilities, Journey 21 in Waukesha and The Haase House in Mukwonago. In this program, Friends Helping Furends, clients attend two sessions each month at HAWS, getting the opportunity to volunteer and help with…
HAWS’ K9 Task Force is responsible for creating and implementing individual management plans for the dogs at HAWS, to support shelter residents through tailored enrichment, environmental modification, medical intervention and more as needed. Overall goals include improved quality of life, increasing desired behaviors and easing the transition from shelter life to adoptive home life.
