August 2023 Tattle Tails

I think all of us have witnessed the magic of animals, the transformation that occurs when a connection is made, the connection that transcends trauma, that heals, inspires and soothes one’s soul. I believe more people have been saved by animals than perhaps animals saved by people, but it goes both ways.

HAWS was created by community members to serve the needs of our community. Co-founder Mike Schallock famously said “It’s about the animals,” and his words guide us to this day for each program, service and activity we offer for the pets and people of our area.

HAWS’ K9 Task Force is responsible for creating and implementing individual management plans for the dogs at HAWS, to support shelter residents through tailored enrichment, environmental modification, medical intervention and more as needed. Overall goals include improved quality of life, increasing desired behaviors and easing the transition from shelter life to adoptive home life.
