VOLUNTEER AT HAWS
As a non-profit organization, funding at HAWS is always tight! That's why volunteers play such an important role. Volunteers allow us to offer high-quality care to our animals while helping contain costs. Volunteers can be found throughout our organization, from those who assist with special events to those who work hand-in-hand with our staff. You, too, can make a difference in the lives of homeless animals by volunteering at HAWS. There are many rewarding volunteer opportunities available for dependable people with a little free time to give.
Volunteers assist in the following areas:
- Special Event Help: Volunteers are critical for the success of special events throughout the year, from bake sales to our annual Pet Walkathon. If you are interested in helping with our major events, call the shelter at 262-542-8851 and ask how you can get involved in our activities.
Do you like working with people and want to help animals? The FRIENDS OF HAWS plans and coordinates various activities in support of HAWS. The more help we have, the better we are able to help the animals! Visit the Friends page on this website for more information.
If you like working with people and have availability on weekends, this job is for you! Saturdays and Sundays from 1:00 - 3:00 p.m. and 3:00 - 5:00 p.m., and Wednesdays from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. can get incredibly busy; visitors walking in are often unsure of where to turn. We are looking for smiling faces to "man" our lobby, to greet visitors as they walk in and direct them accordingly. Greeters can also point out relevant handouts to inquiring visitors. Greeter training is done as requested and interested candidates should call to schedule a specific training time after attending a general volunteer orientation. You must be 16 or older for this position.
- Animal Care and Socialization:
Volunteers assist the staff by working in the kennels, walking dogs, socializing cats and providing one-on-one playtime for the animals.
NOTE: If you need volunteer hours for community service for Huber or the court system, please contact Mark Hess, HAWS Facilities Manager, at 262-542-8851, x108. Hours obtained through our regular volunteer program will not be valid.
Thinking About Becoming a Volunteer?
Join us at a volunteer orientation! All prospective volunteers must attend an orientation session prior to helping at HAWS. These sessions are scheduled on a regular basis - please check back for a time that fits into your schedule. Upcoming volunteer orientations are listed on our Upcoming Events Calendar.
At the orientation you will learn how our dedicated volunteers help us, fill out the volunteer application, tour our facility and learn more about the services we provide. Because we cover important information at our orientations, those arriving 10 or more minutes late will be asked to come back for the next orientation. Thank you for your understanding.
For more information, contact HAWS' Volunteer Coordinator, Sara, at 262-542-8851, x120 or email volunteer@hawspets.org.
