HUMANE EDUCATION AT HAWS

See HAWS Education blog to find out what we're up to!

The Education Department at HAWS offers a variety of programs and services to inspire awareness and compassion for all living things.  Shelter tours provide an overview of the humane society and a peek behind the scenes.  Programs on dog bite prevention, pet care, animal welfare issues and the workings of a humane society are offered.  We work with a variety of groups and organizations to educate members in the Waukesha community of all ages about HAWS, general animal care, and many other topics.

For more information on any of the listed educational programs contact our Humane Educator at: 262-542-8851, x118, or email
khris@hawspets.org.

Tours at HAWS:  We do not run tours during the summer months because of our Kids 'N Critters Day Camp which runs from the middle of June through August.  Call to find out how you can schedule a visit from HAWS to your facility!

We run tours on weekdays starting between noon and 4:30 p.m. Tours last about an hour and include a discussion about what HAWS does for animals and the community, researching a pet before you bring it home, and what it means to be a responsible pet owner. After the tour 15 minutes is reserved for meeting and learning about some of the adoptable pets at HAWS.

We do not charge for our tours, but strongly encourage donations - either cash or items from our wishlist.

After school programs:  We are involved in a number of after-school programs in Waukesha County schools. If you would like, a HAWS staff member can visit or become a regular facilitator in your program.

Kids Programs

  • K'HAWS - K'HAWS is an educational group for children between the ages of 8 and 12.  The group meets on Friday nights during the school year.  Membership is only $30 per child, and covers all costs of this program.  For more information call 262-542-8851 x112 or email jessica@hawspets.org.

  • Kids ‘N Critters Summer Camp - Through activities, games and arts & crafts, Kids 'N Critters day camp focuses on animals and their care.  Kids also have the chance to use what they've learned in working with our animals at the shelter!

We have 2- and 5-day sessions running between the middle of June through the middle of August for age groups ranging from 7 to 14.  Information on Summer Camp is posted on our website in early February each year, with registration starting at the time of posting.

  • Kid’s ‘N Critters Winter Camp - Similar to the summer camp, this camp is run during the winter break.  One- to three-day sessions are held for kids 7-9 years of age, and 10-13 years of age.  Information on Winter Camp is posted on our website at the end of September each year, with registration starting at the time of posting.

Scouts

  • Tours We do not run tours during the summer months because of our Kids 'N Critters Day Camp which runs from the middle of June through August.  Call to find out how you can schedule a visit from HAWS to your facility!

Tours are run on weekdays starting between noon and 4:30 p.m.  They last about one hour and include a discussion about what HAWS does for animals and the community, researching a pet before you bring it home and what it means to be a responsible pet owner. After the tour 15 minutes is reserved to meet and learn about some of the adoptable pets at HAWS.

Because HAWS closes most evenings at 5:00 p.m., and we use our meeting rooms for training classes, seminars and other activities, we cannot schedule tours to start after 4:30 p.m.  We also do not conduct tours on weekends as it is difficult to run a tour when we are at our busiest!

We do not charge for our tours, but strongly encourage donations - either cash or items from our wishlist.

Tours must be pre-scheduled.  The first semester of the school year is generally wide open.  Tours during the second semester are often booked a month or two ahead of time, so please call early if you have a specific date and time in mind.

  • Award Projects (Silver & Gold Awards, Eagle Scout Projects) – We would be happy to help your scouts achieve their awards!

Help for Problem Pets

Is your dog barking too much?  Your cat using your sofa as a scratching post? Our friends at the ASPCA have put together a wonderful free resource filled with articles addressing specific pet behavior problems.

If you can't get answers from the articles you can ask a "Virtual Behaviorist".  Just fill in the behavior problem you're having with your furry family member and you will get a response from one of their nationally recognized behaviorists!

Want to Get Crafty?

We get many calls from organizations wanting to donate their time or do volunteer work for us.  While it's almost impossible for us to find work for groups of kids, we do appreciate other efforts.
